When I backed off from from a fitness program I find it very hard to get started up again, and I have been going to the gym for a long, long time.  You do need to have a written program before you start nd keep a journal of all your workouts.  Journals keep track of your progress (a great motivator) and you can easily tell where you left off.  Number of reps, weight used, etc.

Although I have a program in place, my first few days of working out are just a free for all where I cover all the body parts at a low intensity level.  Kind of like a super warm up week.  It helps me not get discouraged.  That's just me personally.
